Graphite on paper - 16x20 inches - $2342
The Auburn State Theatre has been a fixture of this community for over 90 years, and for an artist rooted in the foothills, it felt like a subject that deserved to be drawn. Built in 1930 by San Francisco-based T&D Jr. Enterprises and designed by architect J. Lloyd Conrich, the theatre was conceived as something genuinely grand. Seating for more than 1,300, a sweeping balcony, and an interior finished in silver and black with plush seating that made it one of the most striking venues in the entire T&D portfolio. Conrich brought that same care to other Northern California landmarks, such as the Cascade Theatre in Redding, and the Sierra Theatre in Grass Valley, but there's something particular about the Auburn theatre that drew me in. It's the kind of building that holds a town's memory.
